Diecast models do not wear out from play. They wear out from being stored badly, and almost all of the damage on a second-hand car happened in a box rather than on a carpet.
The fixes are cheap and take about an hour for an entire collection.
A drawer of loose models grinds itself down every time it opens. Wheels scrape paint off the car next to them, bases chip hoods, and after a few years the whole collection has the same soft-edged look.
Anything that gives each model its own slot solves it: a tray, a divided case, a drawer insert, even corrugated card cut into a grid. The slot does not need to be nice, it needs to stop two castings touching.
Direct sun fades printed liveries and yellows clear plastic — windows go first, then white bodies. A shelf opposite a south-facing window will visibly change a collection within two summers.
Display out of direct light, or behind glass with something between the models and the window. Dust, by contrast, is harmless and wipes off.
Warm water, a drop of dish soap, a soft brush. Work around the print rather than across it, rinse, and dry immediately — water left sitting at the base joint will mark the metal.
Never use solvent, alcohol or anything branded as a polish. Printed liveries lift straight off under solvent, and the matte finishes used on newer castings go shiny and never come back.
If a car rolls badly, the axle usually has hair or carpet fiber wound around it. A pin or a pair of tweezers clears it in seconds. Do not oil the axles — oil collects dust and makes the problem permanent.
Rubber tires on Collectors models harden with age. Nothing reverses that, but keeping them out of heat slows it considerably.
Sealed cards warp in humidity and the blister yellows in light. Store flat rather than upright, out of an attic and out of a garage, and use a protector case if the model matters.
Once a card is creased it stays creased, which is why most collectors who keep packaging also keep it away from the models they actually handle.
